construction works/projects
// 23 May 2017

To ensure the maintenance, modernization and expansion of the rail network and to meet the highest customer requirements, CFL regularly carries out works on the railway infrastructure. These measures require the closure of certain sections of the different tracks in order to minimize the inconvenience for customers, residents and other stakeholders and to ensure that the work can be carried out quickly and safely. Traditionally, these works are carried out during school holidays or on weekends.

During the Pentecost week, as well as on a few June weekends, the CFL have to partially close the lines 10 (Luxembourg – Troisvierges – Gouvy), 30 (Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier), 50 (Luxembourg – Kleinbettingen – Arlon), 60 (Luxembourg – Esch / Alzette – Rodange – Athus) and 90 (Luxembourg – Thionville). Replacement buses have been set up. All details are available online on www.cfl.lu.

Line 60: Luxembourg – Bettembourg – Esch-sur-Alzette – Rodange – Athus

Two sections of line 60 will be closed in the week from 3 to 11 June to carry out extensive works on the renewal of two sites and their surroundings.

Closure Bettembourg – Volmerange-les-Mines

In the Dudelange-Usines station various modernization works are required, making the closing of the section Bettembourg – Dudelange – Volmerange-les-Mines necessary. In order to adapt the railway track, works are being carried out at this particular station in order replace or renew sleepers, crossings and rails, as well as to adapt the railway installations. Moreover, rails and sleepers are also being renewed on the stretch between Bettembourg and Volmerange-les-Mines.

Closure Esch-sur-Alzette – Pétange

The line section of line 60 between Esch-sur-Alzette and Petange will also be closed for the same period in order to carry out renewal and modernization works at the Differdange station. In view of the advanced age and degree of wear of the existing installations and to ensure the continuous smooth operation of these, it is necessary to renew, among others, the track body and drainage system. During this particular close, replacement buses depart from Esch-sur-Alzette in order to reach Rodange via Petange.

Closures during one or several weekends in June

Line 10: Luxembourg – Troisvierges – Gouvy and line 30: Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier

Modernization of the section Ettelbruck – Troisvierges

After several decades of operation, the tracks of line 10 are gradually being renovated and modernized. For this purpose, the section between Ettelbruck and Troisvierges will be closed on the weekend of Pentecost from 3 to 5 June. Inside Goebelsmühle railway station, several switch points, particularly stressed elements of the railway infrastructure, are replaced. In addition, CFL benefits from the barrier in order to improve and stabilize the power supply of the “North Line”, for example, by setting up a new electric substation in Flébour and to work in the tunnels Bourscheid and Michelau. In addition, works are being carried out to secure the track section between Kautenbach and Wilwerwiltz from the risk of rockfall at the height of the Hockslay and Kirchberg tunnels. Since the terrain is rather difficult to access, helicopters are used for the works. Finally, works are being carried out to reconstruct the river bridge near Goebelsmühle station.

Several major construction sites are currently underway to take account of the steady increase in the number of passengers on track nr. 10, the so-called “North Line”, and track nr. 30 Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier. The construction the second viaduct Pulvermühle, the new Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg station and its funicular, as well as the two-track expansion of the Luxembourg – Sandweiler-Contern section, are part of the ongoing large-scale projects aimed at removing the bottleneck at the north entrance of the Luxembourg station. During the Pentecost holidays and on several weekends in June 2017, CFL will be able to promote the works on these strategic locations.

In this context, the section Luxembourg – Oetrange of track nr. 30 must be closed on the weekend of 17/18 June, so that construction works on the two-track expansion of the Hamm – Sandweiler-Contern section can be continued. The trains are diverted via Syren, and the stops Cents-Hamm and Sandweiler-Contern will be reached by buses.

On track nr. 10, more precisely on the section between Luxembourg and Dommeldange, works will continue on the construction sites of the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg station and the new viaduct Pulvermühle. To do this, the affected section of line nr. 10 will be closed during the weekends of 10/11 June and 17/18 June in order to to carry out works on the tracks of the new viaduct as well as on the tracks and platforms of the new Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg station. These works will be finished in the night from Sunday to Monday.

In order to erect a road bridge connecting the “Eurohub Sud” logistics center with the new intermodal terminals in Bettembourg-Dudelange and the Dudelange-Burange connection, and in order to proceed to works on the railway infrastructure, the section between Bettembourg and Thionville will be closed on the following Sundays: 11 June, 18 June, 25 June as well as 2nd July and 9 July 2017. The service between Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette is covered by train, while the service between Luxembourg and Thionville is covered by replacement buses.
